US Army
WWII Medal of Honor Recipient
Desmond Doss
The Demond Doss Foundation Presentation will take place during the 7PM Evening Ceremony.
Mel Gibson’s WWII biopic, “Hacksaw Ridge,” tells the true story of MOH Desmond Doss, who was a conscientious objector to receive the Medal of Honor. As an unarmed combat medic, MOH Doss rescued at least 75 soldiers wounded on the battlefield while under heavy enemy fire during the brutal battle for a 400-foot-high ridge, the Maeda Escarpment (Hacksaw Ridge), on Okinawa in War World II.
Guided by his faith, particularly the commandment ‘thou shalt not kill’, he never fired a gun. He was scorned by his peers. The Army repeatedly tried to kick him out, but he endured ridicule because he wanted to serve his country. Fellow soldiers who previously scoffed at Desmond’s simple faith and refusal to bear arms – now owed their lives to him.
Desmond Doss was twice awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his bravery for actions in Guam and the Philippines.
Special guests from the Desmond Doss Foundation will be Gabe Videla Chairman, Board of Directors and Jeffrey E. Cordone Acting President, Chairman.
